About the site's URL options

Learn about Path URL, Subdomain, and Custom Domain

There are three ways to access a knowledge base site:

Path URL

Visitors will use your help desk's primary domain name and a unique code that identifies each knowledge base site. You choose what code or word to use when creating or updating a site. You do not need to configure and maintain any DNS, allowing you to quickly and easily create and manage your sites.

Example URL: https://desk.mycompany.com/hc/docs/en, where "docs" is the site's unique code.

Subdomain

Visitors will use your help desk's primary domain and a unique code that identifies each knowledge base site as a subdomain of the primary domain. You choose what code or word to use when creating or updating a site.

You will need to configure a new DNS record with your DNS service provider and set up your server so that it can route subdomain requests to the help desk. Remember, the help desk is responsible for routing subdomains to the right site.

Example URL: https://docs.mycompany.com/en, where "docs" is the site's unique code.

Example A-Record DNS:

  • Type: A
  • Name: docs
  • IP Address: (your server's IP)

Example CNAME-Record DNS:

  • Type: CNAME
  • Name: docs
  • Host or Target: mycomany.com

Custom Domain

Visitors will use a domain name different than the help desk's primary domain name to access the knowledge base site. Of course, you can set the custom domain when creating a site or by updating it.

Like with the subdomain URL type, you will need to configure a new DNS record with your DNS service provider and set up your server to route custom domain requests to the help desk.

Example URL: https://www.mycomanysupport.com/en

Example A-Record DNS:

  • Type: A
  • Name: www
  • IP Address: (your server's IP)

Example CNAME-Record DNS:

  • Type: CNAME
  • Name: docs
  • Host or Target: mycomany.com

Please note that you will also need a DNS record for the naked domain, that is, mycompanysupport.com. The DNS record would be similar to the ones showed above, with the difference of not having a name.
